Chapter 7
* * *
Sundown was a serious as I'd ever known him to be. We had a lot of fun teasing each other and turning the inter-species aspects of our relationship into humorous banter. This was very different. I slipped my arm around his waist.
"I asked the Watcher if your clan ever lived near the lake. He said they did."
"An insightful question. Yes, the Nhunfi were here, although it was long ago, before I became aware and separated into a nest."
I had a few ideas about that and wished I had a way to substantiate my suspicions. The little bits and pieces of conversations I'd overheard between Sundown and other Chal were insightful, but not the same as hard evidence. I hugged him as I brushed a kiss to his temple. "C'mon. Pull the car keys out of the switch and walk with me."
He didn't say anything as he retrieved the keys and gave them to me. I slipped them into my pocket and took his hand as we headed for the old homestead. I'd walked this lane so many times as boy. Back then it was dirt and gravel. Now the grass had taken over...I kept a wary eye out for skinny "sticks" that suddenly moved.
The lane took a gradual swing to the left, and my heart broke a bit as I gazed across the empty meadow. The old two-story farmhouse and the outbuildings were gone. I'd expected as much, but it hurt a little to actually see it. I forgot my sad nostalgia when Sundown spoke and pointed.
"The house was there, and there were three smaller structures for livestock just beyond. The barn on the end had a fenced area for cattle."
The hair on my body--even on my balls--stood on end.
"How do you know this? Do you see my memories?" Dear Lord, I hoped he did because I didn't want to contemplate the alternatives. Like I fucking had any to ponder, anyway. I didn't.
"I just know. Perhaps I am remembering through you, but I swear it would be from when we first met. I do not intrude past your wall, beloved."
I tugged his hand to get him walking again. I wanted to see what remained of the old house foundation.
"That has to be the explanation, Sundown. I haven't been up here since I was about twelve. It was about that time my family started to sell parcels of the land. It's too bad because as a boy I dreamed of living here."
We stepped onto a crumbling concrete pad and peered down into the shallow depression. Once upon a time, it had been the cellar, but I suspected it was more of a wet-weather pond these days.
"Time moves on, babe." I moved away and sat on the edge of the concrete. "The trees have grown so I can't see the sun reflecting off the water now."
Sundown sat and leaned against my side. His body heat felt good in the damp spring air and breeze coming across the lake. I draped my arm over his shoulders.
